Does dull, dry skin have you singing “Summertime Sadness”? Cheer up! Flawless, glowing skin is way easier to attain than you may think! With a healthy diet, proper skincare regimen, and some fresh makeup tips, your skin will be as radiantly beautiful as the shining sun in no time. Here are 10 ways to get your skin prepped and primped for a fabulous, sunny summer!
1. Eat Healthy
It may seem like a no brainer, but one of the best ways to get glowing skin is by eating healthy foods. Carrots are packed with Vitamin A which is extremely good for your skin and eye sight. Vitamin C is a go-to favorite for healthy skin and can be found in yummy fruits like oranges and strawberries! Antioxidant-rich fruits like pomegranates and berries help reduce free radicals in your skin which prevents against lines and wrinkles. One secret skin-enhancing superfood is pumpkins due to their high levels of zinc which maintains collagen and promotes skin renewal – you can snack on their seeds or make a delicious pudding out of canned pumpkin, plain yogurt, and pumpkin spice!
How awesome is it that one of the most beneficial natural beauty enhancers is practically free? Water doesn’t just hydrate your body, but your skin as well. Dehydrated skin can look dry and wrinkled, but with adequate water intake you can keep your skin moisturized from the inside, and block it in from the outside using a facial moisturizer cream. To determine how much water you should drink per day, take 1/2 of your body weight and drink that amount in ounces (Eg. If you weigh 100 lbs drink 50 oz of water per day).
Don’t suffocate your skin with dead skin cells and bacteria! If you aren’t already using a beauty device, it’s time to update your skin care regimen. You should use an exfoliating device 2-3 times per week to get rid of excess buildup and clear your pores. Exfoliating not only gives you a deep down clean, but makes your skin dewy and radiant as well!
Replenish and lock in moisture with beauty products specific to your skin type. If you have dry skin, use a hydrating mask at least once a week and apply a moisturizing face cream in the morning and at night. If you have combination/oily skin, opt for a moisturizer that is oil-free and lighter, and try using an exfoliating mask to strip off excess oil.
5. Wear Sunscreen
Yes, we all want that sun-kissed glow on our cheeks, but harmful sun rays can cause skin diseases and wrinkles which are not worth the cute copper hue. Consider a moisturizer that already has SPF in it or look for an oil-free facial SPF to put on after you use your regular moisturizer. Areas of skin that are often overlooked are your hands and feet, so be sure to include them when protecting against those UV rays.
6. Lighten Up on Heavy Makeup
Thick foundation and caked on makeup are in no way, shape, or form, sexy. You may have been dabbing on a little more during the cooler months to get some color, but now that summer is here, lighten up on the layer load. Use a light layer of foundation or a nutrient infused product like BB cream and tinted moisturizer. Not only will it give you a delicious dewy glow, but it will save you from the dreaded wax melting face when the high temperatures hit.
7. Use a BB Cream
BB Creams are like the unicorn of all makeup. Their light, non-greasy composition fills fine lines and imperfections on your skin, eliminates shine, evens skin tone, and creates a smooth canvas for applying makeup. It’s not hard to find a BB Cream to fall in love with, but you should choose one specific to your skin type and needs. Certain BB Creams contain antioxidants to help fight wrinkles, while others contain ingredients to enhance moisture or mask redness.
8. Use a Self Tanner
Since you are using that SPF religiously to avoid premature skin aging, go ahead and reward yourself with a glowing faux tan! Self tanners are the safe and easy alternative to harmful sun rays and not to mention look absolutely stunning in the summer! Here’s a tip – if you have light hair, apply lotion to your eyebrows and hairline before using a self tanner to prevent it from staining your locks.
9. Contour, Highlight, and Bronze Correctly
Primer may be the unicorn of makeup, but being able to do a good HAC (highlighting and contouring) job is the rainbow that the unicorn lives on. With the right shading and blending techniques you can transform your face into a contoured piece of art! Start by using an angled brush to apply a matte powder a few shades darker than your natural color to the area below your cheek bones. Then brush that same color around the frame of your face, jawline, and down the sides of your nose. Next you’ll take your highlighter/illuminator and brush it on your cheekbones, forehead, and down the center of your nose. Use your powder brush to blend it all together and then brush bronzer over your cheeks and the sides of your face for the ultimate sun-kissed glow.
